Researchers from Pennsylvania State University and collaborators studied how new "signals," such as verified statuses or guarantees, affect hiring in the gig economy. According to study co-author Chenhui "Julian" Guo, these signals are intended to help workers stand out, but their effectiveness depends on whether employers trust them.

The study, published in Information Systems Research, analyzed a specific feature where freelancers offered a financial guarantee by depositing 10% of their bid. If the worker failed to complete a job satisfactorily, the money was donated to charity rather than being paid to the employer.

Researchers found that employers were actually less likely to hire workers using this guarantee. The study suggests employers may have interpreted the guarantee as a sign of a weaker track record rather than a sign of confidence. Data indicated that workers using the guarantee received lower ratings and were rehired less frequently.
