A study led by researchers at the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences has revealed that excessive RNA can impair mitochondria, the structures responsible for generating cellular energy. While scientists previously understood that double-stranded RNA could trigger immune responses, this research suggests that even ordinary messenger RNA (mRNA) can directly damage mitochondria without relying on the immune system.

According to Dr. Zhilong Yang, a professor in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology, the buildup of RNA can interfere with a cell's ability to function. Researchers noted that during poxvirus infections, viruses must manage RNA levels to prevent damaging the host cell's energy supply. The study suggests that the negatively charged nature of RNA might disrupt the electrical balance required for mitochondria to produce ATP.

While the study focused on viral infections, the researchers noted that these findings could have implications for understanding aging-related diseases, neurodegenerative conditions, and the optimization of RNA-based medical treatments, such as mRNA vaccines.
